When it comes to building lifelong habits for healthy living, early childhood is the perfect time to start. At Healthy Little Heroes, we believe that teaching children about healthy eating—especially the importance of eating a rainbow of fruits and vegetables—should be fun, hands-on, and rooted in play. That’s exactly why our incursions into preschools and day care centres are designed to blend intentional teaching with imaginative, child-led activities that leave a lasting impact.

Why "Eat a Rainbow"?

Children love colours—and that makes the concept of “eating a rainbow” such an engaging way to introduce nutrition!

Children love colours—and that makes the concept of “eating a rainbow” such an engaging way to introduce nutrition! Each colour in fruits and vegetables represents different nutrients that help our bodies grow, play, and stay strong. From the reds that support heart health to the greens that help build strong bones, kids begin to learn that different colours bring different superpowers.

But let’s face it—most young children aren’t reading food labels or checking nutrition charts. That’s why turning this concept into a playful, sensory-rich experience is key.

Learning Through Play

In early childhood settings, children learn best when they’re having fun. That’s where play-based learning shines. Whether it's sorting colourful felt fruits, making rainbow veggie faces, or participating in food-themed obstacle courses, play-based learning makes healthy choices feel exciting and approachable.

Play helps children build familiarity and confidence with new foods—especially the ones they may be hesitant to try. Through songs, stories, games, and role play, children begin to understand that fruits and vegetables aren’t just good for them—they’re fun, too!

Intentional Teaching with Real Impact

While play lays the foundation, intentional teaching helps solidify these lessons. Our Healthy Little Heroes facilitators are trained professionals who guide conversations about food in age-appropriate ways. We talk about where food comes from, how it helps our bodies, and what it looks like to make healthy choices.

Combining structure with spontaneity, our nutrition incursions are designed to spark curiosity, build knowledge, and nurture a positive relationship with food.

Setting the Foundation for a Healthy Future

Good nutrition habits built during early childhood can last a lifetime. When children are given the tools, knowledge, and support to explore healthy foods in a safe and playful environment, they’re more likely to carry those habits with them as they grow.

At Healthy Little Heroes, we’re proud to support families, educators, and centres across Western Sydney with meaningful, fun, and effective health and nutrition education.
